Real Food New York is an organization of students and campus stakeholders at colleges and universities in the New York region working to increase the amount of Real Food on their campuses and in their communities. We define Real Food as food that nourishes land, community, and people, by coming from local, sustainable, and just sources. RFNY includes colleges and universities large and small, private and public, in urban and rural settings. Each school represented by the members of RFNY presents a unique situation, with distinct advantages and challenges regarding the procurement of Real Food. At the same time, our institutions tend to have much in common, including our agricultural resources, our current food system structures, and our relatively new programs for sustainability.
Considering both the similarities and the differences of our institutions, the students of RFNY have much to share with and learn from each other. We believe that each of our institutions' purchasing power has a distinct impact on the food systems within our communities, and that we, as students, together, can direct that impact towards supporting Real Food throughout the New York region.
All of our members gather together formally at least once a semester, as well as hold various, informal meetings each month. We organize ourselves in these meetings as we, by consensus, deem most useful to our ongoing efforts (for example, by our institutions' size, setting, or food service provider). Otherwise, we communicate and collaborate by means of an online open space resource site and blog [http://www.realfoodnewyork.org], and through personal communication. Active members of RFNY are expected to attend meetings or post regularly on the website, so that we continue to be as helpful to and supportive of each other as possible.
Real Food New York is part of a growing national network, the Real Food Challenge. For more information on the Real Food Challenge, visit [http://www.realfoodchallenge.org/].
